Baja McNabb
24 years old
6’2”
233 pounds
San Diego, CA
“Primal Scream” by Motley Crue
Hair – buzzed blond
Eyes – brown
Skin – light
Appearance:
Baja appears quite lanky. It is actually kind of hard
to see where he holds his weight, because he does not
look like he has the muscles or the body type of a two
hundred plus pound person. He has long, angular
features, and a smirking face, and his flexibility is
quite apparent, just by the way he walks and moves.
Ring Attire:
Baja comes to the ring usually wearing a regular
tee-shirt, cut-off blue jeans, and black plastic
skater’s elbow and knee pads. He also wears a pair of
finger-less black biking gloves. Finally, he wears
custom-made boots, which have long slots up the soles
to slide in and connect removable roller blades. He
will usually come down skating on the blades, and then
remove them prior to starting the match.
Background:
Like so many other kids, 1985 was a big year in Baja
McNabb’s life. That was the year “Back To The Future
was released to theatres, and brought about a whole
new generation of skateboarders to the sport.
Nine-year-old Baja became enthralled by the antics of
Marty McFly on his skateboard, and he took up the
sport as well. As he got older, and the other
“extreme sports” became popular… in-line skating,
street BMX, boogie boarding, bungy jumping,
snowboarding, indoor wall-climbing, sky-surfing, etc.
etc. etc… Baja took to them all up with a passion.
His parents, however, were oftentimes less than enthralled with their son’s diversions, and they forced him to compete in a number of the “regular” sports as well, growing up. Baja tried baseball, and volleyball, and lacrosse… but the only one in which he was able to latch onto was wrestling. Not so much for the sport itself, but purely as the amateur extension of pro wrestling, which he found intriguing. Pro wrestlers seemed to have the same spills, thrills and chills that he got in all of his extreme sports, and he found the two mixed themselves together quite nicely.
After Baja graduated high school in ’93 as a highly-touted amateur wrestler, he broke out on his own, competing in several semi-pro extreme sports competitions. After a couple of years of having a fair amount of success, but nothing which he could truly call a career, he decided to use the money he had won in his various competitions, and put himself through wrestling school just on a lark. By combining his two passions, he developed a high-flying technique that was rivaling many luche libre wrestlers. He finally completed his schooling, and began wrestling on the independent circuit, mainly in a small fed called Southwest Pro Wrestling. It was here that he met, traveled with, and became friends with the father-son team of Carlos Navarez and Darren Fry.
Baja spent several years on the indy circuits of both wrestling and extreme sports, not breaking the barrier in either. Many people told him that he would probably have to give one of the two passions up, and concentrate on just one, if he was going to be at all successful, but Baja just could not do that. He stuck it out with both, just barely missed qualifying for this year’s X-Games in San Francisco, and luckily received a call from Darren, asking him to join him in the NWC.
